Whether you’re an individual, part of a student group or residence hall, someone who wishes to contribute to a particular project periodically, or someone who would like to initiate their own project in the community, the Office of Civic Engagement can help.

Federal work-study eligible students can apply through the Office of Civic Engagement for job placements at approved Bridgeport not-for-profit community organizations and agencies. Positions include: program assistant, computer lab assistant, science room coordinator, tutor, teacher assistant, and more. Student workers in this unique program have the opportunity to work with community leaders, gain mentors, building a professional network, future work references, and gain experience in the field.

University of Bridgeport currently has partnerships with: Bridgeport Caribe Youth Leaders, Bridgeport Public Education Fund, Bridgeport Rescue Mission, Bridgeport YMCA, Cardinal Sheehan Center, Green Village Initiative Groundwork Bridgeport, Homes for the Brave, Hope School, Junior Achievement, LifeBridge, McGivney Community Center, and Mercy Learning Center.

UB’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, serve others, and gain unique perspectives on cultural, political, and social issues. ASB prides itself on helping participants build leadership skills, engage in unfamiliar communities, and develop critical thinking skills based on cultural experience.

Applications are typically due by the early of October, followed by interviews with the Selection Committee in ember. Team meetings and fundraising begin immediately after decisions are reached. To maintain an effective and close-knit group, ASB is capped at 12 participants. The trip destination is announced at the first team meeting. Before departure, participants receive training in how to serve effectively and can expect their days on ASB to be full of physical work, reflection and discussion activities, and cultural sightseeing trips.

Accommodations on the trip are generally modest (typically a church or volunteer center) provided by the service site. Participants should bring a sleeping bag or sheets/blanket, towel, and toiletry items. Communal meals will be served with dietary needs accommodated.

Make it a day ON, not a day off! Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrations take place throughout February in conjunction with Black History Month activities. If you are interested in volunteering on the planning committee, contact our office to get involved!
